North American Industry Survey Gives Top Ranks to Bigfoot Crane

A recent industry survey conducted by American Cranes & Transport (ACT) magazine ranked Bigfoot Crane in not one but two of their industry listings. It’s a major achievement for Bigfoot Crane, since this is the first time the company has been recognized in this way.

WHERE BIGFOOT CRANE PLACED

The annual survey results are represented by three separate lists: Top 20 Companies, Top 10 Largest Tower Cranes and Top 10 Largest Number In Fleet:

  • Bigfoot Crane placed 13th overall on the Top 20 Companies list and number eight on the Largest Number In Fleet
  • Ranking in the Top 20 Companies is determined by the tower crane index, which is the sum of the maximum load moment rating of all the cranes in a fleet measured in tonne-meters. Bigfoot Crane is one of only four Canadian companies to achieve placement on this list and is also the only company with one location.
  • A fleet total of 52 cranes, including the San Marco SMT 550, provided the muscle behind the 8th place ranking on the Top 10 Largest Number In Fleet.

TOWER CRANE INDUSTRY GROWING STRONG

ACT’s annual survey, which garnered a greater than 70 percent response rate, returned some solid results overall. In spite of economic downturns and dips in the oil sector, the numbers show that there is moderate but steady growth in the industry.

  • The year’s total capacity of every crane from every company that made the list is a whopping 506,026 tonne-meters – that’s 82,822 tonne-meters larger than 2014.
  • The total number of tower cranes across all companies also expanded, from 1,327 in 2014 to 1,531 in 2015.
  • Employee numbers also increased from 6,827 (2014) to 7,945 (2015).
  • From a locations standpoint, the total grew from 217 last year to 259 this year.

Amtrak Utilizes Boscaro Spreader Bar

Amtrak runs more than 300 trains on a daily basis. When the American passenger train company needed valuable train car components lifted for transport to the Midwest, a Delaware based company, Active Crane Rentals, Inc. was hired to perform the hoists. But Active Crane relied on the Boscaro EZ spreader bar system from Bigfoot Crane to perform the job.

In order to maximize on their lifting capacity, Active Crane planned to perform a straight-line pull. To protect the sides of the 70,000 lb and 100,000 lb components, they utilized the Boscaro EZ spreader bar system.

The EZ spreader bar system features a unique design of male and female interlocking sections. Each galvanized section can be used as an individual bar, as was done for the Amtrak lifts, or they can be combined to form an adjustable spreader bar with one-foot increments. By allowing easy adaptation with one system, the need for an assortment of bar lengths is eliminated, which improves efficiency and helps to manage project costs.

LLEAP Awards

Boscaro’s Concrete Bucket and Spreader Bars both qualified as finalists for the LLEAP awards. Although Eagle West Equipment (acquired by Bigfoot Crane Company) did not win in the category, we still made the magazine publication as a finalist.

San Marco Tower Crane Sale

Recently Eagle West Cranes & Equipment (acquired by Bigfoot Crane Company) was proud to complete the sale of new San Marco SMT 520 City Crane to Smedley Crane & Rigging out of Branford CT. As part of the sales process, I recently had the opportunity to visit the first job site for this crane in Cambridge MA for a Hanover Company jobsite.

The jobsite currently also is utilizing a San Marco Self Erecting Crane, the SMH 421. The customer has been pleased with their San Marco cranes and now with the two cranes on opposing corners of the site can service nearly the entire project with these 2 cranes. Getting to see both cranes on site in person gives a great appreciation for the increased efficiency these cranes can bring to a project.

The sale of this crane would not be possible without the entire team we have here at Eagle West (acquired by Bigfoot Crane Company)  working together to complete this delivery. Through production at the factory, delivery via sea containers from San Marco to Branford CT, trucking to Cambridge and setup on site it was a unique and learning experience to go through every stage of the sale and delivery on this crane.

Andre Lalonde Benefit Auction

The following Facebook Benefit Auction is being put on by Heavy Life Alberta, in support of the family of Andre Lalonde, an employee at Whissell Contracting who was tragically taken from us on April 3, 2013. 100% of the proceeds will go to his wife Melissa and children, Michaelle and Alexina.

Crane & Rigging Conference | Industrial Crane & Hoist Conference

CRC/ICHC is an independent crane, rigging, and hoist conference for safety and risk managers, crane and rigging supervisors, fleet managers, and other people working with cranes in construction and heavy industry.

Launched in 2010 by MCM Events, the conference has been held in both the United States and Canada in partnership with various leading crane training and crane and rigging products providers. Education sessions are presented by crane and rigging experts, representing contractors, engineers, insurance providers, crane rental companies, training providers, and health and safety professionals, to name a few.

While some crane and rigging safety topics are timeless, others are predicated by industry trends, changes in standards and regulations, new technology, and shifts in labor demands.
