Hands-On Learning with Bigfoot Academy’s Simulator Training

At Bigfoot Crane Academy, we believe great operators are made through great training. Our simulator-based programs give students the tools they need to succeed in real-world crane operation — safely, confidently, and efficiently.

To showcase how simulator training prepares operators for the jobsite, we spoke with Derek Vincent, a seasoned crane operator with over a decade of industry experience. Derek recently completed our Luffing Crane Simulator Training Course, and his experience offers a first-hand look at how realistic and impactful the program is.

First Impressions: A True-to-Life Experience

For Derek, the realism of the simulator was immediate and impressive.

“At first, it took me a second to realize it was a simulator because of how real it felt,” Derek shared. “The seat moved with the load, and it simulated the crane’s shifting exactly. It’s very close to operating a real crane.”

Bigfoot Academy uses industry-leading Vortex simulator technology to recreate the feeling of working in a real crane. Operators experience seat movement, load feedback, and environmental conditions like wind and rain — all within a safe, controlled environment.

Training That Matches the Real Thing

When it came to practicing key crane maneuvers, Derek found the simulator remarkably accurate.

“I was picking up a 20-foot I-beam and slewing it into place just like I would with a real crane. No swinging, no lag — it handled exactly the same.”

The training allowed Derek to reinforce his precision skills, building muscle memory that seamlessly translates to live equipment.

Support from the Bigfoot Team

Throughout the course, the Bigfoot Academy team was there to support Derek’s learning journey.

“The instructors were knowledgeable and could answer every question,” he said. “For someone new to cranes, they would be an incredible resource.”

Instructor Trenton and others on the team provided real-time guidance, helping operators get the most out of every session.

At Bigfoot Academy, we ensure each operator receives personalized attention — whether they’re brand new to cranes or a seasoned pro refreshing their skills.

Honest Feedback for Continuous Improvement

While Derek found the training realistic and beneficial, he also provided valuable feedback on one of the more challenging modules.

“There was one blind lift exercise where it was tough to place panels across floors using just the hook camera. Some spotter-style guidance would have made it even more realistic.”

At Bigfoot, we constantly refine our courses based on operator feedback — because continuous improvement is part of our culture, just like it is in the field.

Why Derek Recommends Bigfoot Academy’s Simulator Training

When asked if he would recommend the training to others, Derek’s answer was clear:

“Absolutely. It’s perfect for anyone who needs a refresher, wants to try a new piece of equipment, or wants to build seat time before getting into the real thing.”

One of the biggest advantages of simulator training is removing the risks — no damage to equipment, no risk to site personnel, and no weather delays. Operators can safely develop their skills in rain, snow, or clear conditions, gaining experience they can trust.

A Proven Career in Crane Operation

Derek’s perspective comes with real-world credibility. With 11 years in construction and 6 years specializing in cranes, he’s operated a wide range of equipment including self-erecting cranes, forklifts, and more.

Today, Derek works with Fourth Grade Construction and frequently operates cranes supplied by Bigfoot Crane Company — including the San Marco SMT550, one of his favourites for its smooth operation.

Going Beyond Cranes: A Full Equipment Experience

Bigfoot’s simulator center also offers training for excavators, backhoes, haul trucks, and more. During his visit, Derek even tried the excavator simulator.

“I hopped on for a few minutes while the instructor was away and ended up loading half a truck!”

Our full suite of heavy equipment simulators ensures operators can expand their skills and explore new career paths in a safe environment.

Long-Term Partnership: Bigfoot and Operators

Derek shared that he values the long-term relationship he’s built with Bigfoot Crane Academy and Bigfoot Crane Company.

“The team is great to work with, and everything — from the simulators to the cranes — has been top-notch.”

We’re proud to work alongside operators like Derek, providing the equipment, training, and support they need to grow their careers.

Final Thoughts: Preparing Operators for Success

Derek’s story highlights why Bigfoot Crane Academy’s Simulator Training is trusted by operators across Canada. Whether you’re new to crane operation or looking to expand your expertise, simulator training is a proven, effective way to learn safely, refine techniques, and step into live operations with confidence.

If you’re ready to elevate your skills, Bigfoot Academy is ready to help you succeed.
